Hi, I'm Mary and this is my blog, Cake Talk.
I'm the owner of Mary's Cakes and Pastries, a specialty bakery that offers unique wedding cakes, grooms cakes and celebration cakes -- all baked fresh in historic downtown Northport, Alabama.
I am also the author of "Marys Cakes Favorite Recipes".
Before I went to culinary school and started baking, I was a management consultant in the Forest industry. In that job, I traveled a lot on business, over a million miles, enough to make me a Premier Exec for life on United Airlines. The best part of going to cities like New York or Paris was peeking in the large windows of the bakeries and pastry shops, with the pretty rows of perfectly decorated pastries and intricately iced cakes. They appealed to the artistic side of me.
So when I came to a career crossroads, I went south. To Alabama.
Mary's Cakes has turned into a popular bakery, where the locals love to come and get their coffee and a sweet. Sarah Hardin, our cake decorator is the best around, and we're proud to feature her cakes, which look as good as they taste, and taste as good as they look. We have many regular customers whom we consider our friends. We make everything in the shop. We love what we do. We even have a blues song written about us!
When I opened Mary's Cakes, I had no idea what it would be like to actually run a bakery. This blog chronicles the daily goings-on at the bakery, and includes lots of recipes, unsolicited advice, and other random stuff.
I hope you like it.
-Mary
Hi there! I could have sworn I've been to this blog before but after reading through some of the post I realized it's new to me. Nonetheless, I'm definitely delighted I found it and I'll be book-marking and checking back often!

Earlier this year my Grandmother's potica pans were destroyed. We can not imagine the holidays without potica. We have searched and have not been able to find potica pans. Some people have recommended bundt pans but Mother says the dough will not rise properly in them. In our area of Slovenia (5 generations ago) they traditionally used ceramic pans but we would be willing also to use metal.

I think we very well maybe. My Great great grandfather was also from brontallo. His Father Pietro Fransico DeMartini he is buried there along with his mother Maria. From what I understand Brontallo's population was only around 150 people during that time. Feel free to email me. It would be cool to figure this out. Thanks a bunch!

Yes. The blog is about the bakery (my occupation) and other random topics.

Is this topic connected with your occupation or is it more about your hobbies and ways to spend your spare time?
