and a silver sixpence in her shoe.
You've probably heard this traditional rhyme many times, especially if you've ever been involved in a wedding or you are about to get married. Known as the "Four Somethings," it refers to the items chosen to be worn or carried by the bride to bring good luck on her wedding day...
Or an excellent source of inspiration to fuel a series of blog posts about the bakery.
Something old represents continuity. For the bride, it is often represented by her mother's or grandmother's pearls.
Today's something old at the bakery? Chicken salad. Yep, chicken salad. We've made it every Friday (and sometimes other days) at the bakery since we opened almost ten years ago. That's a lot of continuity. And a lot of chicken salad.
What's so great about it? It's simple and delicious, with four simple ingredients: chicken mayonnaise, celery, and green onions. Perfectly seasoned with salt and pepper, and perfectly smooth because it's mixed in a food processor, then in a mixer. And it makes the perfect little sandwich when paired with a multigrain croissant.
Come try some of Mary's Chicken Salad this Friday.
Something new offers optimism for the future. It is often represented by the dress.
What's new at the bakery? The newest thing is our new roof. We extended the awning over the ramp up to the bakery so you (and we) are covered coming and going. This was especially helpful Saturday when it rained all day. We were able to get cakes, including a wedding cake, out of the bakery and into a car without an umbrella. Absolutely glorious. And definitely optimism for the future.
Something borrowed symbolizes happiness. Traditional fingertip or church length veils are often the borrowed accessory. My mother had borrowed wax orange blossoms from her grandmother's veil sewn into her headpiece, representing both the "old" and the "borrowed."
At the bakery we borrow ideas and recipes all the time. But today, I want to share something entirely different. We are lucky to be located in historic downtown Northport, and have for our landlord, the owner of an antiques shop, Adams Antiques. They are extremely generous in lending us decorative and functional items. We have all forms of old and borrowed gems that make the ambiance of the bakery unique... Like this stone lion that keeps watch over the courtyard.
Something blue stands for love and fidelity.
At the bakery something blue will be something we love. Today? The start of the holiday season. We are FINALLY getting ready to pull out the Christmas decorations and dust off the holiday cookie recipes. The first holiday recipe we make is fruitcake -- because it requires weeks of bathing in rum before it is ready to sell.
It may not look like much right now, but it has been getting a thrice-weekly rum bath for the last month and a half. We're about to switch to twice weekly for the final two weeks. Then, the cakes will be uncovered and packaged. What's under that blanket of rum soaked cheesecloth? A cake full of the best quality dried and candied fruits and nuts possible... cherries, pecans, cranberries, lemon and orange peel, papaya, and pineapple. The "cake" is made with butter, brown sugar, eggs and flour. Not the typical fruitcake everyone makes fun of. Those who have tried ours order in advance because when they are gone, they are GONE. They will be ready by Thanksgiving.
A sixpence in her shoe...
A sixpence in your shoe is a wish for good fortune and prosperity. It is given to the bride to wear in her left shoe to symbolize wealth and financial success for her and her future husband.
Our sixpence? A closing tidbit of business advice. Today it's the importance of attention to detail. I call it the Rule of One. You can read more about it here, but it basically goes like this: As a business owner or worker, you see dozens, if not hundreds or more of whatever good or service you provide. Ninety-nine percent of them may be perfect, and you may not notice the one percent that is not. A customer sees only one. If the one item he sees, or the single experience he has, is sub par, it reflects on you and your business. Be sure every ONE represents your best effort.
